The "Viking" Marching Band
This award winning group is the backbone of the MHHS Marching Unit. The Marching Band is a combination of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds Band, Symphonic Band, and Percussion groups.
In conjunction with the Lancer Drill Team (pom-poms) and the Cavaliers (Rifle Team, Honor Guard/Swing Flags, and Flag Team), the Marching Band forms the impressive Marching Unit, featuring great half time productions and various competitive and exhibition parades. Their annual spring trip has taken them to venues such as Toronto, Niagara Falls, Montreal, New York, Boston, Chatanooga, Atlanta, Orlando, and more. Their main competitive events include the 'Miss America Pagent Boardwalk Parade', the Hagerstown, Maryland 'Alsatia Mummers Parade', and the annual spring trip festival. Exhibition performances are held during football game half times and for various events within the local community. In 1995 and 1999 the Marching Unit represented Howard County in the 'Maryland Gubernatorial Inaugural Parade.'

The Jazz Ensemble
An exciting group that uses the standard 'big band' format to perform jazz and popular music from the 20's to contemporary. Improvisation is an integral part of the group's format and performances though it is not necessary for each member to be proficient in that skill. |
 |
Dixieland Jazz Combo
A very small, select instrumentation that specializes in the Dixieland Jazz style. This provides the greatest opportunity for improvisation as it is a small group and constantly has innovative needs. They perform at various school and community events and venues such as senior citizen centers, banquets, receptions, presentations, etc. Instrumentation includes one each of the clarinet, trumpet, tenor saxophone, trombone, tuba, piano, and drum set.

 |
Percussion
The group serves the percussion needs of each concert band, especially the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble. In addition to meeting those demands, they also perform selections composed for percussion ensemble performance. They are the backbone of the Marching Band and Marching Unit keeping the nearly 200 members performing with precision and flare.
